R U OK?Day: Checking in with Older Friends, Neighbours and Loved Ones

RUOK? Day is a gentle reminder that a simple question can make a world of difference. But when it comes to older people—whether that’s a parent, a neighbour, or a friend—we sometimes hesitate. We worry we’ll be prying, or that we won’t know what to say if the answer is “no.”

The truth is, asking “Are you OK?” doesn’t need to be complicated. It’s really about showing you care and being willing to listen.

Why it matters

Many older Australians experience loneliness, especially if they’ve lost a partner, can’t get out as easily as they used to, or feel like they don’t want to “burden” anyone. A caring question can remind them they’re not alone and that someone is there to listen.

Tips for starting the conversation

  • Choose the right moment – Find a time when you won’t be rushed, maybe over a cuppa, a walk, or a quiet phone call.
  • Be natural – It doesn’t have to be formal. A simple, “I’ve been thinking of you—how are you really going?” works.
  • Listen with care – Give them time to answer, and really hear what they’re saying, even if it takes a little while.
  • Follow their lead – They may want to talk, or they may just want to know someone cares. Both matter.

If you’re the one asking yourself

Older people often tell us they don’t want to “interfere” in a neighbour’s or friend’s life. But showing care isn’t interference—it’s kindness. A kind word, a quick call, or even just stopping to say hello at the letterbox can open the door for someone to share how they’re feeling.

What if they’re not OK?

You don’t have to have all the answers. The most important thing is to listen and reassure them that help is available. Encourage them to talk to a GP, a support service, or someone they trust. If you’re really worried, you can help them take the next step.

On RUOK? Day, let’s remember: connection matters at every age. Whether you’re checking in with Mum, a neighbour down the street, or a mate at bowls, your words could make all the difference.
