We know that getting the right equipment or changes to your home is important — and we’re here to support you every step of the way. The process for the Assistive Technology and Home Modifications (AT-HM) Scheme can be quite complex as it involves specialist assessments, quotes, and approvals. This means it can take a little longer than expected. Here’s a simple guide to help you understand what’s involved with this new scheme.
What to expect – step by step
1. Occupational Therapist (OT) visit
First, an Occupational Therapist will be referred to see you at home. This usually takes around 2-3 weeks, depending on availability. They’ll assess your needs and make recommendations.
2. Trials and quotes
You will need to try some equipment or have suppliers visit your home – for home modifications (with an OT).
At least two quotes are required.
This stage can take a few weeks, depending on schedules and availability.
3. Reviews and approvals
All reports and quotes are carefully reviewed to make sure recommendations are safe, suitable and meet program guidelines. This part involves several steps as they need to be approved via both Care Connect and then through he Government via My Aged Care. This can take from a few weeks to a few months.
4. Delivery or works begin
Once everything is approved, we arrange delivery of equipment or organise the start of home modifications as soon as possible.
Please note – your quarterly Support at Home ongoing funding can’t be used for assistive technology purchase or home modifications
Why it takes time
Each step is there to make sure:
- the solution is right for you
- funding is used appropriately
- everything is safe and meets program requirements.
Because many people and organisations are involved, delays can sometimes happen.
We understand waiting can be frustrating. While we can’t always speed up the process, we’ll keep you informed, answer your questions and support you along the way.
