A reassuring Support at Home update for people receiving care at home
The Federal Government has today announced an important change to the Support at Home program that directly affects older Australians and their families.
From 1 October 2026, older Australians will no longer be required to pay co‑payments for essential personal care services, including:
- Showering
- Dressing
- Continence care
This change comes after concerns that some people were having to reduce or forgo care altogether due to cost. The Government has now confirmed these services are essential and should never be cost‑prohibitive. They will now be classified under the clinical care service category – meaning no co-payment will be required.
What this means for you:
- No co‑payments for essential personal care
- Co‑payments will still apply to some non‑clinical services under everyday living and independence support service categories
- Greater certainty and dignity for people receiving care at home
If you or someone you care for is currently receiving aged care support — or planning for it — this change may make a meaningful difference.
