Savings tips by state
With the cost of living continuing to rise, many people are feeling the pressure. If you’re finding that groceries, bills or everyday expenses don’t stretch as far as they used to, you’re not alone.
While we can’t control prices, there are small, practical steps that can help make day‑to‑day life a little easier, specific to each state.
Victoria (VIC)
Older Victorians with a Pensioner Concession Card, Health Care Card or Seniors Card may be eligible for:
- Concessions and benefits
- Electricity & gas concessions
Ongoing percentage discounts on power and gas bills, plus additional help during winter or for medical needs (such as life support or medical cooling concessions). - One‑off Power Saving Bonus
Eligible households can receive a $100 payment when switching or reviewing their electricity plan through Victorian Energy Compare. - Council rates & water concessions
Discounts on council rates and water service charges (applied through your local council or water provider). - Public transport savings
Reduced fares with a Seniors Myki or Pensioner Myki, making travel more affordable.
New South Wales (NSW)
If you live in NSW and hold a Pensioner Concession Card or NSW Seniors Card, you may be eligible for:
- Concessions, rebates and benefits
- Gold Opal Card – public transport
Travel on buses, trains, ferries and light rail is capped at $2.50 per day for eligible seniors and pensioners. - Energy rebates
Annual electricity and gas rebates (including the Seniors Energy Rebate and Low Income Household Rebate) applied directly to your bill. - Council rates & water rebates
Reductions on council rates and water charges for eligible pensioners. - Health savings
Reduced PBS medication costs, access to the NSW Spectacles Program, and other health‑related concessions. - Book a Savings Finder appointment with Services Australia who can help you find savings through identifying the rebates and vouchers relevant to you.
Queensland (QLD)
Queenslanders aged 60+ with a Queensland Seniors Card, Pensioner Concession Card or Health Care Card may be eligible for:
- Electricity & gas rebates
Eligible households can receive around $370–$386 per year off electricity bills, plus a gas rebate if connected. - Water & rates concessions
Discounts on council rates and water charges, particularly for pensioners. - Discounted public transport
Concession fares on buses, trains and long‑distance rail with a Seniors or Pensioner card. - Vehicle registration discounts
Reduced registration fees for one vehicle (and/or boat) for eligible seniors and pensioners. [qld.gov.au]
