How families can safely manage long aged care wait times

A median wait of 347 days. That is how long older Australians are currently waiting for Support at Home, from first application to the start of services.

Federal data released in May confirmed the staggering figure, and over 100,000 people are waiting for an ongoing Support at Home place right now.

For many families, waiting close to a year is more than an inconvenience; it can become a serious risk.

During this time, a person’s health may decline faster than expected, meaning the support finally approved no longer reflects their actual needs.

In some situations, this delay can contribute to avoidable emergencies that result in an earlier-than-planned move into residential care.

Lynda Chalmers, chief executive officer of in-home care provider Care Connect, says families can take meaningful steps during the wait. Here are six that matter most.

Apply early, plan immediately

It is better not to wait until a crisis occurs. As soon as early signs of vulnerability appear, such as slight memory changes or reduced stability when moving around, begin the application process.

Use the waiting period to prepare by researching service providers, exploring short-term community support, and ensuring everything is in place to act quickly once funding becomes available.

Use the ‘worst day’ approach during the assessment

It is important not to minimise needs during a government assessment, but instead to describe day-to-day life as it is on the more difficult days rather than the easier ones.

Having a family member or independent advocate present can also help, as they offer an objective view and ensure important details are not missed.

Put futureproofing measures in place early

Remaining safely at home requires preparation. Modifications such as handrails, ramps, improved lighting and smart home technology can reduce fall risk and support independence.

Early action helps ensure a safer environment while awaiting services.
