What does personal care assistance include?
At-home personal care assistance is practical support with personal tasks that are part of your daily routine. We work with you at your pace, in the way that feels right for you. Depending on your needs, personal care can include:

- help with showering, bathing and hair washing
- help getting dressed and undressed
- grooming support, including hair care, shaving, skin care and oral hygiene
- discreet, respectful help with continence and toileting
- support getting in and out of bed safely
- support with mobility aids and moving safely around your home
- help getting ready for appointments, outings or the day ahead

Funding your personal care services
Under Support at Home, personal care services for elderly Australians currently fall under the Everyday Living category. This means that you may need to make a personal co-contribution for these services. As of the 1st October 2026, personal care is moving to the Clinical Care category. This means these services will then be fully covered under your Support at Home budget and you will no longer need to pay a personal co-contribution.
If eligible, our team look at assisting with personal care services through the Commonwealth Home Support Program (CHSP), or Out of Hospital Care program. This will depend on your region, your assessed needs and approved services.

Yes, wherever possible. It’s easier to relax with someone who already knows your routine, so we do our best to schedule the same support worker for your regular visits and let you know of any unavoidable changes in advance.

Yes. Many clients feel more comfortable with a support worker of a particular gender. Share your preference when we set up your care plan, and we’ll do our best to match you.

Personal care for elderly clients covers everyday support such as bathing, dressing and grooming, provided by a trained support worker. Nursing care is clinical work and involves, for instance, wound dressings, medication and catheter care, delivered by a Registered Nurse.

Care Connect only delivers CHSP-funded personal care services in Metro Melbourne. In other states, you can still access personal care services through your Support at Home funding or another Commonwealth Home Support Program (CHSP) provider.

Personal care services are included under the everyday independence category under the Support at Home program. If your assessed care needs include personal care, you will be able to access these services under your Care Plan. Your Care Partner will work with you to ensure you are able to access the required services.

Care needs naturally shift with time, and the support you receive should change with them. We review your care plan regularly, and you can ask for a review at any time, be it for more visits, fewer visits or a different type of help.
