Seek assistance from government agencies for help with utility bills

An older man and older lady look at paperwork. They have pencils in their hand. The lady is out of focus and the man is the main focus of the image. the man is smiling. They are in a home setting.

Utility bills are expensive, and can be difficult to budget for as they can vary seasonally.  There can be unexpected increases or additional charges, and it is often difficult to tell how much a bill will be before it arrives in the mail or your inbox.

But, did you know that many older Australians may be eligible for state government assistance to help pay utility bills? According to the federal government’s MoneySmart website (www.moneysmart.gov.au), you can apply for a utility rebate or voucher by contacting the agency in your state directly:

For NSW residents:

There are rebates for low-income households, families and seniors, gas rebates, and medical and life support energy rebates. For further information, and to find out if you are eligible for support to pay your utility bills, visit www.energy.nsw.gov.au, www.service.nsw.gov.au, or call 13 77 88.

For QLD residents:

The Queensland government provide cost of living, energy and gas rebates to eligible households.  This includes the Home Energy Emergency Assistance Scheme, available to people experiencing problems paying their electricity or reticulated natural gas bills as a result of an unforeseen emergency, or a short-term financial crisis.

For further information, and to find out if you are eligible for support to pay your utility bills, contact the Queensland Government helpline on 13 74 68, or visit: www.energy.gov.au/rebates/energy-bill-relief-households-queensland.

For VIC residents:

There is a Utility Relief Grant Scheme, a variety of electricity concessions, and gas, water and sewerage concessions provided by the Victorian government. For further information, and to find out if you are eligible for support to pay your utility bills, visit the Department of Families, Fairness and Housing or phone them on
1800 658 521.

And don’t forget: If you can’t pay your bill on time, contact your retailer to find out your options. Their hardship policy outlines what they can do, and you may be able to delay payments, or pay your bill off in smaller amounts.
